Yes, everyone mis-remembers details about where they were and what they were doing, even after a huge event like 9/11. But there is a huge difference between confusing dates and confusing whether your helicopter was shot down. Sure, memories are faulty and not distinct, accessible computer files. Gladwell compares Williams not remembering if he was in a helicopter that was shot down with not remembering details about his conversation with a friend after 9/11. So he's saying all these incidents are not examples of Williams lying, they're just more examples of memories failing? Are you sure Williams wasn't just lying to make the stories better? Sure does seem like the most obvious explanation. Gladwell doesn't mention that Williams has other incidents of not telling the truth. Shouldn't we listen to what the guy said and at least consider that as a possibility? Or does Gladwell just want to push his believe that everything everyone knows is actually wrong? Gladwell insists that we shouldn't listen to the explanation and apology given by Williams, because everyone is being duped, including Williams himself. Shouldn't that count for something? He didn't say, sorry, but that's what I remembered. First and foremost, Brian Williams said himself that he lied about what happened. In other words he falsely claimed to have been in the helicopter that got shot down because that's what he remembered, not because he was lying. Latest episode - is about Brian Williams and how perhaps he wasn't lying about his experience in Iraq but rather his memory is to blame for his false account of what happened.
